Hi. I'm looking for suggestions for a background stitch for Eric the Red. This is a Susan Porta canvas that came with a stitch guide but the Pave stitch they recommend just wasn't doing it for me. I've been looking thru the books for something open and light...but nothing is rocking my world. Eric is fairly small, he'll probably turn out to be an ornament on my Christmas tree. I was toying with the idea of something diamond shaped with a small bead in the middle, but I wasn't sure if that would take away from my main man. Does anyone have any ideas?

How about a darning pattern in a diamond pattern and no bead.
Sue's comment is one kind of background I really like. darning patterns are so fast and they give you texture and pattern but, because they are flat, they don't compete. I'd probably do one in pearl metallic.
The other type of background I'd think about is a blackwork pattern. These can be small or large and you could also find one which is a diamond shape. This would be more open than pattern darning, but it too wouldn't overwhelm the main part of the design.
I'd do this is a perl metallic as well. The neat thing here is that in both case, what you're doing is adding texture, but not color. Because the stitches are flatter (darning) or much more open (blackwork ) than the dense stitching of the head, you get a real sense of it being the background.
Let us know what you decide.
Keep stitching,
Janet

I've never done darning or blackwork before. What does it look like?
You could also try a honeycomb stitch. Try a rayon type thread for the sheen. Then you can decide if you want to put a bead on it or not.
Good luck!
